I don't usually do these, but this looks relatively informative, and I was tagged by an amazing person, so it'd be wrong not to do it. I was tagged by
BlazingCoral, and I'll be answering these based on my
Undertale fanfic-turned-fancomic,
Flowey Is Not a Good Life Coach.
1. What got you started drawing comics?
A long time ago I took a comic-making class at some community center, but it was a joke and all I got out of it was a weird polymer abomination of a superhero. In theory that was my first time I made a (one-page) comic, but a few years ago I tried making my first comic page, something related to Minecraft I think. It was awful, but I've still got like 6 pages hidden on my computer somewhere. I think I'll put my old drawings on my Patreon, cause you know, can't have those things floating around for free and in the nude.
2. What is your favorite comic that you've read?Tokyo Ghoul caught my heart and squeezed it to the breaking point two years ago, and more recently Jojo's Bizarre Adventure took me on its bizarre, bizarre ride. They're two very, VERY different comics (well, manga) but they're both executed masterfully. I regularly steal art "riffs" from them (treating art like jazz here).
3. Has there been a scene so far that has been particularly hard to capture in your current and/or past comics?duhhhh I dunno. Art-wise, the background of
ch 4, p 1 absoLUTELY drove me crazy, not because it was difficult, but because I took SO DANG LONG on it. It was my first time drawing the interior of a house for me, so I'm sure it'll get faster the more I do it, but you will notice that I didn't draw the house from that angle ever again in that chapter...
4. How long did you wait before starting your current comic and/or comics in the past? (i.e. the writing/story development process)Before I started this comic, I actually had a story idea marinating in my head for about a year and a half. It was something like Tokyo Ghoul meets Pokemon in a medieval fantasy setting. I kept revising it as I researched and learned about the writing process, and it was getting more solid. I wanted to pitch it to a comic publisher, but my perfectionism (and probably inexperience) kept me from going forward with it.
Then I read Unrestedjade's fic, and it absolutely blew me out of the water, though it was a few months before I decided that I'd do something with it. I believe I started it over Thanksgiving break, as a way to distract me from the fact that I'd be spending it without my family and in an empty apartment. Lol it's a good ride now though, I don't have to think about writing for a while
ヾ| ̄ー ̄|ノ5. If you could have done anything differently when you were starting out, what would it be?I would've paced better, using less panels per page. Especially the
last page of chapter 1... I'd make the entire bottom half of the page just Flowey's glorious face. Too much crap is everywhere
6. Who is your favorite character to write?Psych I don't write biatch but if I did it'd be... Papyrus. Especially later on
(⋆‿⋆)7. Who is your least favorite character to write?Undyne I think. I got so stressed trying to make her voice match her in-game personality AND Jade's writing style at the
start of chapter 4. Now don't go and judge that one line of writing just because I mentioned I'm insecure about it
8. How drastically did the story change since you started?I haven't changed anything... .
9. What are the major influences/inspiration for your comic and/or previous comics?See answer 2. I wish I could reference some other fancomics at this point, but I don't actually read too many :^O
10. What does your process look like?
Oooh this is the question I'll eventually answer with a video! But let's have a numbered list for now.
- Steal Unrestedjade's writing and convert it into comic panels.
There that's it. no jk, here's a real answer
- Divide Jade's writing into pages and then chunks which are numbered and written out as panel descriptions.
- Make a super loopy sketch of the page, complete with drunken expressions
- Ink the panel borders, add text, and make a neater blue-pencil sketch of the panel contents
- Ink stuff
- Pass the page to EarthXXII, who either flats or properly colors the page for me
- Color finishing touches, add sparkles
and BAM IT'S DONE. Oh and so is this questionnaire XD
Sorry, not gonna tag anyone. That's the most difficult thing on here and I'm lazyyyyy (and tired)
